The Painted Globe

Materials: A world globe identical in size to the Sandpaper Globe: the continents are painted various colors and the oceans are all blue

Purposes:

  • Visual recognition of individual continents and oceans

  • To see the relationship between the continents and the oceans of the world

Age: 3 ½ – 4 ½ 

Preparation: The child has worked with the sandpaper globe.

Presentation: 

  • Invite the child for a lesson on the Painted Globe. They will bring the painted globe and you will bring the sandpaper globe.

  • Compare specific components to see that the globes are the same.

  • Indicate some other areas on the sandpaper globe for the child to find on the painted globe.

  • Mention the land surfaces look different but they are both still land surfaces.

  • Move the sandpaper globe to the top right of the table.

  • Frame a continent with your hands and introduce the vocabulary of “continent”. Repeat this for a few.

  • Frame an ocean with your hands and introduce the vocabulary of “ocean”. Repeat this for a few.

  • Offer a three-period lesson. When complete, point to where the child lives, encourage repetition, and take the sandpaper globe with you.
